Grace Scholars shone in the Manila Global Round of the World Scholars Cup when they won the Top 5, Top 9 and Top 10 (Senior and Junior Division) in the Overall events out of 120 teams qualified for the Tournament of Champions (TOC) held last September 6-12, 2019 at Resorts World Manila.
The students who raised the GCC banner were Senior Team: Johann Sven Uytanlet (Gr. 11-5), Jenica Alea Vizmanos (Gr. 11-4), Racquel Escolar (Gr. 12-1), Clarence Christian Chua (Gr. 11-1), Sofia Marianne So (Gr. 11-1), Robin Cheng (Gr. 10-1), Gabrielle Keziah Lim (Gr. 10-5), Steffi Ivette Serrano (Gr. 10-1), and Annatalia Sophia Domingo (Gr. 8-5); and Junior Team: Kendrick Nathan Ong (Gr. 81), Josh Neilsen Cheng (Gr. 7-1), Andrew Kyle Tan (Gr. 7-1), Kylie Danielle Sy (Gr. 7-1), Helaena Pascua (Gr. 7-1), and Kyrstal Lim Tiong Soon (Gr. 7-1).
The students competed for two days in debate, collaborative writing, the scholars bowl (written Quiz Bee) and the Team Challenge (Quiz Bee using clicker). All the questions, motions and essay prompts were taken from the given curriculum with this year’s theme: World on the Margins.
The event was participated in by less than 30 countries around the globe, more than 1,500 participants. The GCC teams brought home a total of 42 silver medals, 98 gold and 9 trophies.
The coach, Miss Lelina Forneas commented, “receiving these trophies and medals reminds me that someday we also cast our crowns before the King of Kings as a show of our gratitude for the marvelous things God has done for us.” For she counted this victory through the inspirational verse given by the school president, Dr. James L. Tan which is found in Jeremiah 33:3 ―Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you do not know”
